The eternal log for saving on wood

For heating, I use an ordinary stove, in which the wood burns out very quickly, so with intensive heat production, a significant part of it goes into the chimney. As a result, in order to maintain a normal temperature level, it is necessary to constantly charge the fuel. To solve this problem, I began to use the "eternal log", which helps to save 30-50 percent of firewood. Without it, I have one loading of the furnace burns out in 1 hour 10 minutes, and with it 30 minutes longer.

Materials for the manufacture

To make an eternal log you will need:
  • thick-walled metal pipe d76 mm, the length of an ordinary stove block for the stove;
  • metal sheet for brewing pipe ends;
  • nut M12;
  • bolt M12;
  • steel corner 10x10 mm - 20 cm.

The process of making eternal logs to save

I used a pipe with a diameter of 76 mm. I cut it in length under a standard log, which I put in the oven. The diameter used affects the filling capacity. If the combustion chamber of the stove is high, and you can load a lot of firewood into it, then the pipe must be used thicker.

There is nothing complicated in manufacturing. It is necessary to cut two circles from the sheet metal along the diameter of the pipe and hermetically weld its ends. After that, I cut a steel corner, getting 2 pieces of 10 cm. I cook them crosswise to the pipe along its edges, getting stable legs. Then he simply drilled a 12 mm hole on top of the tube with a drill. He put a nut on it and welded it, having received a filler neck. After that, a bolt acting as a cover can be screwed into it. A small twig was welded to his head so that it could be twisted without a key. Around the perimeter with an interval of 4 cm made a series of holes with a 3 mm drill.

There are no strict criteria for the dimensions of the used pipe, since it all depends on the parameters of the stove, or rather the number of firewood that can be loaded into it. I want to note that you need to use thick metal so that it does not burn out. It is also impossible to make few holes, and even more so, to use thin drills of 1 or 2 mm, since steam under pressure is not a joke. If during the test the log makes a whistle from strong pressure when the steam comes out, then there are few holes, so it needs to be removed urgently. After that, you will have to drill holes to a larger diameter. But you do not need to make them too large, because ash will get inside, and washing the brewed pipe is uncomfortable. Better more small holes than a few large ones.

How to use

To use the eternal log, you need to unscrew the lid and pour water into the pipe, completely filling it. I try to use almost boiling water so that the process starts immediately.

After refueling, close the filler neck with a bolt.

I put the eternal log on the bottom of the stove and lay it on the sides and top with firewood.

After that, I kindle a fire and close the stove tightly.

Why does it work

Using eternal logs increases the duration and quality of burning of a single load of firewood. Fire and heat can last up to 50 percent longer, depending on the design of the stove. Personally, my burning is extended to 30 percent. My friends with other parameters of the stove show savings of 15 percent or more, which is explained by inappropriate parameters of the dimensions of the log itself under their firebox.

This result is achieved due to the fact that the specific heat of water vapor is higher than that of air. This is a physical fact that has long been proven. In air, this indicator is 1 (kJ / (kg · K), while in steam it reaches 2 (kJ / (kg · K).
I also want to note that the eternal log is not suitable for all types of wood stoves. It is ideally compatible with ordinary stoves with a direct chimney. If the brick kiln has a channel chimney in the wall, then in certain cases there is a possibility of condensation of unburned steam. If you want to use eternal logs with such a stove design, I advise you to inspect the inspection hatches of the chimney for sticky soot. If it is not, then the log is suitable and you can safely use it.
